On the way to explore Nami island, most people missed this beautiful garden which is the combination of Korean nature and European architecture.
The arboretum is located in Chuncheon city, Gangwon-do. The garden is not close to subway station but you can take a free shuttle bus from Gulbongsan station to get there. Cars and taxis would also be good choices and it only takes around 10-minute drive.
It used to be the film location for famous Korean dramas such as Full House 2, Love Rain and That Winter, the Wind Blows. Jade Garden is an attractive beauty that yet to be discovered.
There are 24 distinctive-themed areas as Dry Garden, Wedding Garden, Blueberries Garden, English Border Garden and so on, which are home to 3,000 plant species (rhododendrons, maple trees, irises, and blueberry bushes etc). If it does not sound good enough, you could also be impressed by finding yourself immerse in colorful gardens, graceful flowers, waterfalls and European-style houses.
According to the themes, each garden offers different kinds of plants and structures which make Jade Garden a perfect venue for events and photo shoots. I got so many photographs with the water fountain in the middle of a stream, or with the sculpture of horses made of plants. You can also go trekking on some trails inside of the garden. The clear natural water, green and fresh leaves of the trees and the display of thematic gardens, together with fresh air from the mountain nearby, create a peaceful and refreshing place for those who wants to relax and detox. Inside of the gardens, there are also coffee shops and restaurants where you can stop by the enjoy good food and coffee.
I tried a bulgogi hotdog (which is a fushion combination of American style hotdog and Korean sweet beef) from a coffee shop and it was totally yummy. Due to the season, there would be some parts of the arboretum that are closed or not much to see. But it did not affect the experience here. Even though the arboretum is man-made, it still remains the natural sides by keeping the mountain trails and waterfalls. Moreover, the European architecture makes it more elegant, as you got to travel to a mini European style garden.
You can spend a few hours here with a picnic with friends, or it is also an ideal place for wedding and couple photo shoots. Therefore, if you have a chance to visit Chuncheon city, do not hesitate to pay a visit this hidden gem. You can also visit nearby attractions such as Nami island, Gapyeong rail bikes and so on.
